I was recently reading The Only Game in Town, economist Mohamed El-Erian’s new book on central banks.
When referencing the image below, he says:
“Most of us are wired to function well thinking about one, two, or maybe even three of the four circles. Very few of us feel comfortable operating in all four, let alone at their common and volatile intersection.”
But this intersection is exactly where the ocean economy and its path towards a sustainable blue economy resides.
I don’t know if I’ll ever become one of the “few” that is comfortable operating at this intersection, but Emerging Oceans is my attempt to get there.
“Writing is thinking. To write well is the think clearly, that’s why it’s so hard.”

Why Oceans?
In 2019, over the course of about a month during the peak of pandemic lockdown, I was able to travel across the oceans, view the world through a new lens, attend an amazing online event, connect with people around the world, and maybe link a few passions - surfing, oceans, investing, economics - together for a new personal mission.
I began to wrap my head around what sustainable investing really is and the issues with what I was seeing in ESG labeled funds.
I learned about how the big companies we rely on for energy and food were making significant changes and entrepreneurs were doing their game-changing thing.
The deep dive was beginning to open up new ideas for businesses and initiatives.
I was, and still am, piecing together how to make an impact and what it might look like, but the lightbulb is glowing a little brighter.
